Description

Inscribed by L. Frank Baum

L. Frank Baum. Dot and Tot of Merryland. Pictures by W. W. Denslow. Chicago: Geo. M. Hill, Co., 1901. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by Baum on the recto of the front ads page: "Dear Elizabeth: / If your mother approves / your reading this book / there is no reason I / should object / L. Frank Baum." Octavo. [226], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's full yellow cloth, decoratively stamped in browns and gilt on boards and spine. Binding heavily worn and soiled, joints cracked, binding loose, many pages loose, first two leaves missing, a few pages with amateurish tape repairs to gutters, a few pages chipped. Neat gift inscription by the mother of "Elizabeth" to her above Baum's inscription (not interfering with Baum's inscription). A poor copy, not uncommon for this title, as the weight of the paper was too heavy for the sewing of this book. Baum's final collaboration with Denslow, with many beautiful color illustrations by him throughout. Greene/Swann 16.
