Greely's Arctic Expedition
Adolphus W. Greely. Three Years of Arctic Service An Account of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881-84 and the Attainment of the Farthest North. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886.First edition. Two octavo volumes. xxv, 428; xii, 444 pages. Illustrated. Engraved portrait of Greely used as frontispiece in Volume I. Maps, including one folding at the end of Volume II, and one map in a pocket mounted to the rear pastedown of Volume II. The map in the pocket has been rebacked with cloth but has sadly split into several sections at the folds.
A mated set, uniformly rebound in tan cloth with paper title labels mounted to the spine of each volume. Replaced endpapers and pastedowns. Small library withdrawal stamps and perforations on the preliminary pages of Volume II. Slight lean to Volume I. Externally fine, Volume I with small dampstain at the edge of several pages, else a handsome restored set in very good condition.
This is Greely's own story as commander of the Arctic Expedition commissioned by the U.S. government to establish meteorological observation stations and to collect astronomical and polar magnetic data. Though Greely's expedition attained the farthest northern point to that time, his expedition had to be rescued, but only after his men had endured severe conditions, allegedly resorting to cannibalism to survive.
