Captain William Dampier. A New Voyage Round the World. London: James Knapton, 1703. [and:] Captain William Dampier. Voyages and Descriptions, Vol. II. In Three Parts. London: James Knapton, 1700.Fifth and second editions, respectively. Two octavo volumes. [10], vi, 550, [4, publisher's catalogue]; [viii], 112, [74, General Index to Dampier's Voyages and publisher's catalogue] pages. With five folding maps inserted in Volume I, and four folding maps inserted in Volume II.
Uniformly bound in contemporary full paneled calf, both volumes rebacked in nineteenth-century mottled calf, spines tooled and ruled in gilt, two burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels. Some rubbing to spines, some wear to boards, some toning, foxing, soiling to text. Good.
"Dampier was the best known and probably the most intelligent of the famous group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniards in the South Seas from 1680 to 1720. His industry in taking notes of all he saw was equaled by his pains in preserving them from destruction. His first voyage took him from Virginia to Spanish America and across the Pacific to the East Indies. He traveled extensively in the orient on several voyages which lasted from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on Australian shores" (Borba de Moraes I, 244).
