Description
Johannes Kepler on Snowflakes
Johannes Kepler. Strena seu de nive sexangula. Frankfurt: Gottfried. Tampach, 1611. First edition. Quarto. Woodcut printer's device, three woodcut illustrations in the text. Modern antique-style calf, front board lettered in gilt. Light spotting and staining to the pages, mostly in the margins. A very good, attractive copy in a handsome modern binding. In the form of a letter, as a New Year's gift for his friend Johannes Matthaus Wackher von Wackenfels, Kepler wrote in letter form this essay describing why snowflakes are hexagonal. His work here was completed two centuries before the solution was discovered. "It is not only a charming letter, lighthearted and full of puns, but also a perceptive, pioneering study of the regular arrangements and the close packing that are fundamental in crystallography" (DSB). Extremely rare. Casper 39.Auction Info
