Description

With 220 Color Plates of British Sea-Weeds Printed from Nature

William Grosart Johnstone and Alexander Croall. The Nature-Printed British Sea-Weeds: A History, accompanied by figures and dissections, of the algae of the British Isles. Nature-Printed by Henry Bradbury. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1859-1860. First edition. Four octavo volumes. xv, [1, blank], 188; [iv], 203, [1, blank]; xi, [1, blank], 200; [xv], [1, blank], 324 pages. With four color-printed half-titles, one hand-colored lithograph, 220 color-printed plates and one uncolored plate inserted throughout. Complete. Contemporary half red morocco, gilt over dark green cloth boards, spines ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endleaves. Spines darkened and worn, some wear and soiling to boards, bookplates and ownership signatures, wax residue on endleaves (from where labels were presumably removed), a few gutters cracked, some light foxing or thumbsoiling to plates and text. Still, a very good set.

More Information:

This four volume set has considerable importance - not just in the study of British Sea-Weeds, but is also an excellent example of color "nature-printing" in which the plants were pressed into a soft lead plate making an impression that was then used in manufacturing the printing plate. This technique, invented by Louis Auer in Vienna, was brought to England by Henry Bradbury. This work is his second use of this technique.
