[Bible in German]. Biblia, Das ist: Die Heilige Schrift Altes und Neues Testaments, Nach ver Deutschen Ueberfekung D. Martin Luthers... Germantown: Christoph Sauer, 1743. First edition of the first bible printed in America in a European language. Thick quarto. Approximately 9.75 x 7.5 inches. [11], A-Iiiiii8, Kkkkkk2, [A], A-Mm4, Nn-Nn2 fol. Bound in contemporary full dark brown calf over beveled boards, five raised bands, remains of clasps. Some wear to binding, hinges cracking (binding still strong). Some toning, foxing, marginal dampstaining to text, Yyyy3 with large tear, but no loss of text. Final two leaves partially detached. Still, a very good and desirable copy of this important American bible, scarce complete and in a contemporary binding.

Christoph Saur (1695-1758) was the first German-language printer in the United States. Born in Ladenburg, he and his family emigrated to Philadelphia in 1724 and later to Germantown. As Benjamin Franklin was the only printer who served the German community in America (using standard Roman typefaces, difficult for German emigres to read), Saur imported Fraktur type from Germany and began printing material for them. This bible is perhaps the largest item he printed (in an edition of 1,200 copies). In 1776, his son, Christoph, would print the famous "Gun-Wad" Bible, it being a reprint of this one. Darlow and Moule 4240. Rumball-Petre, p. 26.
