Description

First Edition of Sheridan's Memoirs

Philip Henry Sheridan. Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan. General United States Army. New York: Charles L Webster & Company, 1888.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. xiii, 500; xi, 486 pages. Engraved portraits of Sheridan used as frontispieces in each volume. Illustrated. Maps (some folding).

Publisher's original olive green cloth with titles and general's shoulder rank insignia stamped in gilt on the spine, and a large gilt-stamped vignette of Sheridan on a galloping horse on the front boards of each volume. Floral endpapers. Boards with moderate shelf wear at the edges and spine ends. Corners slightly bumped with minor abrasions. Hinges in both volumes tender or cracked, not affecting the structural integrity of either volume. The contents are clean with the usual toning. Small area of loss at the lower edges of the front free endpaper, flyleaf, half-title, and frontispiece of Volume I. Offsetting from the engraved portraits of each volume. Otherwise this is a handsome set in very good condition.

Phil Sheridan died just two months after sending his memoirs to his publisher. He served with distinction in both the Civil War and the later Indian Wars on the Great Plains. He participated in the battles of Perryville, Stones River, Chattanooga, and the final campaign of the war at Appomattox. Upon his death in 1888, his wife commented that she would "rather be the widow of Phil Sheridan that the wife of any man living."
