From the Library of Samuel Sewall, A Judge of the Salem Witch Trials, Signed by Him in 1718

Corrected edition (the first published in 1611). Octavo. (Approximately 6.75 x 4.25 inches). [xxxi], [1, blank], 544 pages.

Contemporary full calf, covers and spine ruled in blind. Some wear to edges, hinges cracked (yet still holding), text toned, upper margins a bit close, dampstaining throughout, text a bit toned, some ink marginal notes, triangular tear in text on page 509 (about two inches), one one-inch tear to upper margin on page 515. Good. An early pronunciation dictionary and metric measurement guide.

From the library of John Poole, Boston Merchant died November 1711, with his elaborate signature from 1688 on the front blank, then from the library of Salem Witch Trial Judge Samuel Sewall, signed by him on page [ii], purchased by him in 1718 (noted under signature). Also with the bookplate of Sir William Pepperell, Sewall's son-in-law, and the Hero of Louisbourg. With the signature of Pepperell's son Andrew on the final leaf. A wonderful provenance.

Samuel Sewall (1652-1730) was a Massachusetts judge who is best remembered for his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials, for which he later apologized (the only judge to do so). He was also one of the earliest abolitionists, his essay The Selling of Joseph (1700) strongly opposing slavery.

Sir William Pepperell, 1st Baronet (1696-1759) was a colonial merchant and soldier, best remembered for organizing , financing and leading the 1745 expedition that captured the French fortress Louisbourg during King George's War.
