From the Libraries of Samuel Sewall and Sir William Pepperell, Signed Twice by Sewall

Text in Latin and Greek in parallel. (Approximately 6.5 x 4.25 inches). [vii], 533, [1, blank], [88] pages. Index.
Contemporary full calf. Covers ruled in blind. Corners and spine edges worn, some damage to joints (yet binding is still quite solid), outer half of title-page torn away, text toned, several marginal ink notes throughout, pastedowns removed, each replaced by bookplates of Sir William Pepperell. Final leaf has two signatures by Samuel Sewall, one dated 1770 and it has two autographs of John Rogers, president of Harvard University until 1684. Overall, a good copy with an excellent provenance.
Samuel Sewall (1652-1730) was a Massachusetts judge who is best remembered for his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials, for which he later apologized (the only judge to do so). He was also one of the earliest abolitionists, his essay The Selling of Joseph (1700) strongly opposing slavery.
Sir William Pepperell, 1st Baronet (1696-1759) was a colonial merchant and soldier, best remembered for organizing , financing and leading the 1745 expedition that captured the French fortress Louisbourg during King George's War.
