Folding Map

Daniel Neal. The History of New-England Containing an Impartial Account of the Civil and Ecclesiastical Affairs of the Country to the Year of our Lord, 1700. London: J. Clark, R. Ford, R. Cruttenden, 1720.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. x, 330; 331-712, xv pages. Title page in red and black. Folding map. Index.

Full calf over boards. Rebacked to style. New endpapers. Moderate foxing throughout.

Though much of the material here has been lifted from previous sources (Mather and Oldmixon), the publication of Neal's work brought a favorable overview to curious readers in Europe. Early on, in the dedication section, Neal refers to New England as "a pleasant Habitation to its present Possessors, and a Blessed Retreat for Oppressed Protestants in all Parts of the World."

Howes N26. Sabin 52140.
