First edition. Folio. Approximately 16.75 x 12 inches. 111, [1, blank] pages. Complete with twenty-seven tinted lithographed silhouette full-length portraits (except the frontispiece of George Washington, which is only head and shoulders) of distinguished Americans, as well as twenty-seven lithographed facsimile samples of their autographs inserted throughout. With one exception (George Washington), all of the portraits were done by Brown from life (with each subject posing for him over several years), Brown cutting the silhouette portraits using simple scissors. The subjects are on a variety of tinted backgrounds. Publisher's black morocco backstrip over brown cloth, front cover decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Binding worn, spine torn, front hinge broken, text block broken in several places. Text and plates foxed. A fair copy of a lovely and very scarce book (only one other copy has sold in auction in the last fifty years). Subjects include George Washington, Andrew Jackson, John Marshall, John Quincy Adams, William Henry Harrison and many others.
