Description
Charles Sumner Letter Signed as Massachusetts' senator. One page, 5" x 8", March 18, 1862, "Senate Chamber", Washington, D.C. This letter is addressed to Venango County, Pennsylvania, though the recipient's name has been erased so that it is undecipherable. With congressional franked envelope containing Sumner's signature "C. Sumner". Envelope is slightly stained, most likely from its original transit. The letter has smoothed folds; fine.More Information:
Sumner served as a senator from Massachusetts from 1851 through 1874. Even though he was a fearless antislavery advocate and Radical Republican during Reconstruction, he is perhaps best remembered for the beating he received from South Carolina's Congressman Preston Brooks in the Senate chamber in 1856. This letter reads in part: "I shall take pleasure in laying your petition before the Senate at an early day."
