Description

Civil War Photograph Portrait Lot Including Southern Sympathizer Clement Laird Vallandigham [and] Union General William Selby Harney. This beautiful cabinet card measure 4.25" x 6.5" and is from the W.W. Washburn studio in New Orleans. The image is clear, sharp and in fine condition.

More Information: Clement Laird Vallandigham (1820-1871) was a prominent Ohio lawyer who was arrested by Union troops in 1863 for "treasonable utterances" and banished to the Confederate States. He died from a freak self-inflicted gun shot wound after the war. This Civil War-period photographic oval portrait measures 4.25" x 7" and is mounted to a contemporary backing with printed gilt "frame". The image is bright and clear, the backing is slightly foxed with some toning at the edges, otherwise in near fine condition.  General William Selby Harney (1800-1889) was already a seasoned veteran of the Seminole Wars, Blackhawk War, and Mexican-American War before he commanded the Union Army's Department of the West. Harney was only one of four general officers of the line of the regular U.S. Army when the Civil War began.
