Description
Samuel Chase Document Signed. One page, 6.5" x 8", February 1, 1794, "Baltimore Town", Maryland. Seven words in this partly printed document are filled out by Chase. The document, which seems to contradict the U.S. Bill of Rights enacted three years earlier, reads in part: "I Samuel Chase, Chief Judge of the State of Maryland, do certify all whom it may concern . . . personally appeared before Me Banard Lafon-and did repeat and subscribe a Declaration of his Belief in the Christian Religion, and the Oath required by the Act of Assembly of this State, entitled, 'An Act for Naturalization.'"Samuel Chase (1741-1811) was a member of the Sons of Liberty, who protested the Stamp Act. Later, he was chosen a delegate of the Continental Congress. Though not present when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, he was instrumental in pushing Maryland's vote for independence. He later signed the engrossed copy of the Declaration with most of the other signers on August 2, 1776, in Philadelphia. Interestingly, Article XXXV of Maryland's new constitution, written a few weeks after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, stated: "No other test or qualification ought to be required, on admission to any office of trust or profit, than such oath of support and fidelity to this State and such oath of office, as shall be directed by this Convention, or the Legislature of this State, and a declaration of a belief in the Christian religion." From 1796 through 1811, Chase served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Light edge wear. Boldly signed with paraph; near fine.
