Description

Pearl S. Buck Typed Letter Signed. One page, 7" x 10.5", New York, August 19, 1940. Typed on her personal letterhead, the American writer sends a letter to Mrs. Hine inviting her to "join a group of one thousand American women who wish to express their sympathy to the women of China who, throughout these terrible years of unspeakably barbaric invasion, have won the respect of all the world." This letter is a solicitation that was part of a campaign led by Buck during summer and fall of 1940. The "Book of Hope" campaign raised one hundred thousand dollars for medical relief in China by soliciting $100 donations from one thousand women.
