Description
[Abraham Lincoln]. Lincoln Assassination Letter, written by a young woman, "Pheebe Clark." Three pages, 4" x 6", Washington, April 17, 1865, signed "your Loveing / Sister / Pheebe." Writing only two days after the assassination of President Lincoln, "Pheebe" reports to her sister on the sentiment of the nation's capital. She also gives thanks that General U. S. Grant, who had declined the president's invitation on the night of the assassination to Ford's Theater, was not assassinated. In part as written:"The City is dressed in mourning from one end to the other on account of the murder of the President every Building even to the Negro Shantys Billy and me passed the Presidents House yesterday but as it was Sunday there were no visitors admitted it is well for General Grant that he did not stay to the Theater that Night for doubtless they would have Murdered him to had he been there I am." In a postscript, Pheebe writes, "Ask Mr. Sanford if he is glad Abe is dead. . . . any man here says they are glad he is dead are shot right down there was a Soldier shot for saying he ought to have been dead a year ago."
Three days earlier, John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln shortly after ten o'clock p.m. as he sat beside Mrs. Lincoln at Ford's Theater while watching the play Our American Cousin. The president died the following morning. When Pheebe wrote this letter, Booth was on the run. He was finally cornered in a tobacco barn and killed on April 26. Four of his fellow conspirators, Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt, were hanged on July 7. On toned lined paper. Minor soiling.
