"I believe Booth is Captured and Dead"
[Abraham Lincoln]. Lincoln Assassination Letters (Five), written by a young woman, "Pheebe Clark," living in Washington. All letters are written from Washington and dated between April 22, 1865, and June 21, 1865. In them, the young woman writes of the presidential funeral, seeing President Lincoln lying in state, recent arrests in connection with the assassination, and the death of John Wilkes Booth.Writing the first letter to her sister only seven days after the assassination of President Lincoln, "Pheebe" explains, "I went on Tuesday to See the Presidents Funeral. . . . he was taken to the Capital and Thursday Billy and me went to see him he looks just as I had an idea he did his Coffin was splendid. . . . Was splendid sight the possession was nearly 3 Hours in Passing. . . . Since the President was Murdered there has been but very little traveling." On May 1, she writes about recent arrests in connection with the assassination and passes on significant information about John Wilkes Booth: "this Morning there were a number of men brought to the Penitentiary Night before last for being interested in the Murder of the President. . . . they have their Ears stoped and are Blind Fouled so they can neither see nor hear serves them right there is 65 i believe Booth is Captured and Dead they shot him they brought him through the Arsenal." Expected toning and usual folds.
