Description
Social Reformer William Lloyd Garrison [Jr.] Autograph Letter to Victoria Claflin Regarding Appointing a Woman to Head an Unknown Committee For Grover Cleveland. Two pages, 4.5" x 8.75", Boston, September 24, 1892, to "Mrs. [Victoria?] Claflin". The son and namesake of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison writes to presumably Victoria Claflin, in part: "My Dear Mrs. Claflin, I have had a crowded & perplexing summer & have done nothing regarding a woman in organization for Cleveland. I fully meant to see Quincy but the inability to name the fitting woman for its head puzzled me. I do not thing Mrs. C. a suitable leader much as I like & admire her. She is too superficial & erratic & would not carry the weight desirable. In fact except yourself, I hardly know of a woman who has economic sense of the political kind...Sincerely, W. L. Garrison. I think the Cleveland outlook bright." An excellent letter in fine condition. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.Auction Info
