Description
Samuel F. Smith Autograph Quotation Signed "S. F. Smith." One page, 4" x 5.75", n. p., March 25, 1895. Smith (1808-1895) was a Baptist minister best-known today as the author of the patriotic song, "America," or "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." Here Smith has written the first stanza of the song, in full:"My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring."
Originally "Written in 1832" when Smith was a student at the Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts, he wrote this short quote, which has been mounted to a backing board, less than six months before his death. Set to "God Save the King/Queen," the national anthem of the United Kingdom, "America" served as one of the United States' nation anthems until the formal adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1931.
With a 5" x 5" engraved portrait of Smith. Lightly toned, else fine.
