Description
[Pontiac's Rebellion]. Thomas Gage Autograph Letter Signed "Thos. Gage." One page, 8" x 12.5", New York, February 13, 1764, to Colonel John Bradstreet. In November 1763, ten months after the end of the French and Indian War, Thomas Gage (1719-1787) became British Commander-in-Chief, North America. As such, he inherited Pontiac's Rebellion, which had begun earlier in the spring of 1763 when various Indian groups in the Illinois, Ohio, and Great Lakes region attacked British forts and settlers. In this letter, Gage, uncertain of whether or not the "Savages have renewed the war," prepares Bradstreet for future action. In part as written:"I wish I could acquaint you with what the Provinces would do for certain: The Eastern governments, I believe, are all of one mind, to raise no men till they know whether the Savages have renewed the war or not. You may judge from thence, if they do begin their Hostilities again, what Time the Provincials will be in the field. Unless we hear very soon from Detroit, we can hardly expect any news till April, and I believe the latter End of the month. They give me Hopes that the Jerseys will do something; But at all Events we shall form a corps of Troops, unless Mr. Murray disappoints us in Canadians; which I have demanded of Him, to set off the Moment the Navigator is free, with the Provision Boats I had demanded from Montreal. And I hope we may be able notwithstanding all Disappointments, one way or other to assemble near 2000 men. For which Number I desired you in a former Letter to make all necessary Preparations."
Gage did send Colonel Bradstreet in early August 1764 to bring order to Fort Detroit-but with only 1,400 men. To the chagrin of Gage, however, Bradstreet, feeling that he had too few men, negotiated two treaties with the Indians, thus soiling his reputation among British leaders. This letter is toned with some ink smudges and stains. Weakness and some separations occur along some folds, with some tape repairs on the second integral page. On the fourth integral page, two small holes have been repaired with tape; penciled notations occur on this page.
