Patrick, Provost Marshal General of the Army of the Potomac. Spending the winter months at the headquarters of III Corps at Falmouth, Virginia, Doubleday writes: "The enclosed letter Maj. More Information:

Doubleday was a career soldier who had served in the Mexican and Seminole Wars before the Civil War. Second in command at Fort Sumter at the beginning of the war, he played an important role at Gettysburg where he fought off ten Confederate brigades with 9,500 men, while in command of I Corps, Army of the Potomac. He is most famous, however, for erroneously being credited in 1907 with the invention of baseball, a claim he never made in life.
