Description
William Shirley French and Indian War Appointment Signed as Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay "W. Shirley." One page, 14.75" x 11.5", partially printed with additions in manuscript, Boston, June 27, 1754, bearing a nice Massachusetts Bay seal. French signs a commission appointing Ephraim Hunt as a lieutenant in "the Second foot Company in the Town of Rehoboth Under the Command of Captain Daniel Barney in the first Regiment of Militia within the County of Bristol Where of Thomas Bowen Esqr. Is Colonel." The document bears the endorsements of both Col. Bowen and Daniel Carpenter on the verso.William Shirley was the longest serving governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay under British colonial administration. Though lacking military training, his role in military affairs was instrumental in defeating the French in the French and Indian War. The document is uniformly toned with scattered foxing, taped repairs to the folds on the verso, else with a bold signature and in very good condition.
