Thomas Jefferson Four-Language Ship's Papers Signed and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly-printed page, 20.5" x 16.5", New York, October 17, 1804. This ship's passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes passage for "Richard Kelley of New York master or commander of the Brig called the Paragon of the burthen of 144 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for Senegal and laden with Claret, Rum, Soap, flour, Rice, Tobacco. . . ." Two paper seals in the lower left. Jefferson's signature is large and very bold. On toned paper with repairs on verso to fold separations. Chipping along upper and lower edge.
