Description

Mathew Thornton Autograph Document Signed "Mathew Thornton." One page, 4.75" x 2.25", Londonderry, October 30, 1767, acknowledging receipt "from Mr. Robert White by the Hand of Mr. Samuel Parker three shillings, Lawfull Money, in full of all Accts." Foxed and toned along the folds with chipped edges.

Thornton (1714-1803), a physician, had a royal commission to serve as a New Hampshire justice of the peace. After the American Revolution began, he played a significant role in drafting a new government for New Hampshire. In 1774, he was elected to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, albeit three months after the formal signing in November.
