Description

[Francis H. C. Crick]. Crick's Personal Copy of New Western Garden Book with Five Pages of Handwritten Notes. Large 8vo, 512 pages. Published in California in 1984, this copy of the "Garden Book" belonged to world-renowned scientist Dr. Francis H. C. Crick (1916-2004), whose work in the field of molecular biology led him to discover, with the help of Dr. James D. Watson, the helical structure of DNA. For their discovery, they, along with Dr. Maurice Wilkins, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962.

Crick was an avid and meticulous gardener (he kept several gardening journals) and this particular copy contains holographic notations in the hand of Crick scattered throughout. With the book are five pages of notes, also in Crick's hand, written on 8.5" x 11" paper, giving suggestions for plants to be used in landscaping. On the first page, he has made a list of "Shrubs for shade" followed by the names of sixteen evergreen plants to be used for that purpose with short notes on each plant. The remaining four pages contain a list of twenty-eight plants, each of which is presented with their scientific name and common name followed by page numbers. The page numbers, however, do not appear to match pages where the plants are found in the "New Western Garden Book." Those plants which are deciduous or "drought-tolerant" have been noted as such by Crick. The pages show some age toning and chipping at the edges.
