Description
[Francis H. C. Crick]. Four Garden Journals with Three Maps of the Garden at Well Cottage. Dr. Francis H. C. Crick (1916-2004), co-discoverer of the helical structure of DNA for which he won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was a world-renowned scientist, but he was also an avid gardener. He kept extensive diaries and diagrams of his gardening activities at Well Cottage, Suffolk, England, spanning the period November 1968 through September 1976.The earliest journal begins on November 6, 1968, with a list of flora that he has planted and the location within the garden of each, including the recipe for his planting mixture. Some of the entries are written in a second hand, probably that of his wife, Odile, whom he refers to as "O." Each subsequent entry contains various information on that day's activities including: beginning and ending times, watering, mulching, weeding, fertilizing, plants added or removed, the use of pesticide sprays (with the recipe of each), and the state of the grounds' compost pile. Throughout he pays particular attention to the care of flowering plants such as roses, lilies, lavender, etc. Three of the journals have loose leaves of paper that contain additional notes on the plants used and diagrams of the garden itself. The final entry dates from September 5, 1976, just around the time that the Cricks left England to begin work at the Salk Institute in Southern California.
Included with the journals are three maps of his garden. The first, measuring approximately 16" x 15.5", shows the grounds at Well Cottage, depicting the location of the cottage and pool, both of which are sketched in ink and hand-colored with watercolors. Sketched in pencil and labeled are the locations of plants and trees throughout the grounds. This map is heavily damaged throughout with several spots repaired with tape. The second, a larger map measuring 29.75" x 22" and entirely in pencil, shows a more detailed area of the grounds. The map shows what appears to be a path meandering through groves of carefully planted trees and shrubs, each of which is clearly labeled. Unevenly toned with spots of foxing and staining. Finally, a smaller map measuring 16.25" x 11.75" showing the location of plants within the garden, each of which is labeled. Scattered foxing with two small holes. Each map has the usual folds and chipped edges.
