Description
Josiah Bartlett writes his daughter asking that she come help care for her sick mother, who would die that same day
Josiah Bartlett Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6" x 7.25", Kingstown [New Hampshire], July 14, 1789, to his daughter, Rhoda True of Salisbury, New Hampshire. In this heavyhearted, but restrained, letter, Bartlett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, notifies his daughter that her mother has "taken suddenly ill" and requests that she return home."I am sorry to inform you that your mother was taken suddenly ill this morning and remains so at this time. I am very much afraid her disorder will prove mortal I should be glad if you would come down as soon as you can and if my fears should be verified, should be Exceeding glad if you could tarry with us sometime as you know your Sister Lois's situation and nobody but Sally to take care of things; your Sister Greely is here but her circumstances will not permit her to tarry. Your mothers disorder is of the apoplectic kind. In haste from your Loving Father [signed] Josiah Bartlett."
Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795) was a New Hampshire physician and lifelong public servant, serving variously as a delegate to the Continental Congress, a chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court, and finally governor of the state. Bartlett had married his cousin, Mary Bartlett, in 1754; they had twelve children, Rhoda being the fourth daughter. Later on the day this letter was written, Mary died. Toned paper with some weakness at the folds; minor paper loss at the seal.
