Description

Most Rare, Brass Handled, Confederate Navy Short Sword. One of only a handful of known specimens extant with this example, having been purchased by the consignor from W. Stokes Kirk in the early 1960s. 19" blade with small chip at the tip, rudimentary median ridge, 1 5/8" wide at the hilt flaring slightly to 1 3/4" in the center. Blade generally dark and smooth with a few small areas of old dry surface rust and some scattered areas of salt and peppering, excellent. Cast brass grip with rather crude scales peened at the top. Straight cross guard with disc quillons and recessed textured background. Rope with anchor cast on one side and "CSN" on the other. Hilt with a couple of dents and completely untouched, as is the blade, with nice patina. There is no scabbard. A superb untouched specimen of one of the rarest of all Confederate locally manufactured swords.
