High Grade, Silver Grip, Civil War Presentation Grade Cavalry Officer's Sword Given to Lt Thomas Ledwich New York 2nd Vet Cavalry. 36" blade light gray with minor dark staining, etched for 2/3 its length with, floral/scrollwork, liberty hat, spread wing eagle and crossed flags bearing the motto "Stand by the Union", ricasso stamped "W. Clauberg Solingen". The hilt is decorated on the both sides of the branches with acanthus leaves and where the hilt joins the pommel with stippled leaf and floral motif. The quillon features two high relief cherubs applied over the casting. Silver grip scroll engraved, missing most of its wire wrap. Pommel cap heavily cast with leaves and decorative motifs. Entire hilt perfect showing original gilt in protected areas. Silvered brass scabbard very good overall with 60% original silver finish, a few small scattered dents and a large dent midway between middle mount and drag. Mounts cast in deep relief. Inscribed between the upper and middle mount "Presented to Tos Ledwich Co A 2nd Vet Cav NYSV By the members of his Co." Thomas Ledwich enlisted on 7/15/1863 at Glen Falls New York as a private in Company E 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry, promoted to 2nd Lieut. 10/15/1863 and 1st Lieut. 3/15/1865 mustering out on 11/8/1865. The 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry spent most of the war in the deep south, engaged 18 times in action, losing 249 men. Included is an extensive file outlining the history of the 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry and copies of rosters and pension files concerning Ledwich.
