Description

Quarter Plate Civil War Ruby Ambrotype of Armed Federal Infantryman, with ID stenciled on musket sling. "S. R. Mackrill Co. K" clearly stenciled on the rifle sling. Samuel R. Mackrill enlisted in the 24th iowa Inf. on 9/6/62 and mustered out in Savannah, ga. 7/17/65. The first time we've seen this in the tousands of Civil War images we've examined. Wears kepi, frock coat with high collar, full set of equipment with ctg. box pulled to the front. Holds Enfield rifled musket with bayonet fixed at his side with name stenciled on sling. Fine quality, bluing around the edges no affecting subject, and one small area of emulsion loss at very top, again not affecting subject and easily hidden with different mat. Housed in black thermoplastic case with deep relief scrollwork motifs. Chip on one corner with short hairline crack else fine. A most unusual ID'd Civil War image.
