Description

Jules Verne. Around the World in Eighty Days. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1874. First English edition. Octavo. xvi, 315 pages. 48 pages of ads. Fifty-five black and white plates, including frontispiece. Red pictorial cloth, decorated in black and gold, over beveled boards. All edges gilt. Front hinge cracked. Damaged lower corner of top board expertly repaired. Overall, a very good, bright copy. Though dated 1874 on the title page, the Sampson Low edition was released in late 1873. The same collation and illustrations were used for the first American illustrated edition (1874). Here the ads at the back are dated October 1873. Myers allows for an exceedingly scarce variant with advertisements at back dated October 1872, which would make this a later issue. Myers, 54. From the Jerry Weist Collection.
