Description
Russell Sage Autograph Letter Signed "Russell Sage". One page, 7.75" x 9.75". New York, January 26, 1864, to A. Champion, Esq., Rochester, N.Y. In full: "I have been absent at Troy for a week and on my return find your favor of the 21st and also the five La Crosse & Milwaukee RR Co. Bonds as therein named - Herein find inclosed my check on G S Robbins & Son for $4750 to pay for such Bonds, agreeable to my letter of the 6th instant". By 1860, Russell Sage (1816-1906) was a successful merchant, who had served as a Whig Congressman (1853-1857), and was expanding his fortune. He invested in Western railroads and took his investment in Wisconsin's La Crosse Railroad and expanded it into the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul system. He served for 12 years as its President and Vice President. In this letter, Sage pays for five La Crosse & Milwaukee Railroad bonds! He was closely associated with Jay Gould and invested in Gould's western railroad interests, the Western Union telegraph merger and the New York elevated railroad system. At the time of his death in 1906, his estate was estimated to be $70 million. Fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.Auction Info
