Description

John Buford (1826-1863) Union General in the Civil War, rare war date Signature "Jno Buford Brigadier G[eneral] Vol[unteer]s Ch[ie]f of Cav[alry]" on a 2.25" x .5" mounted to a 3.25'' x 2" card. Buford likely signed this card sometime between July 1862 and just before the Battle of Gettysburg, in July 1863. At Gettysburg, Buford's division successfully held off Henry Heth's Confederates so Major General John F. Reynolds' U.S. I Corps could deploy on the high ground west of the town. This proved to be one of the key factors in the Union victory there. Buford died of typhoid fever in December 1863. Fine condition. This is quite desirable given the scarcity of anything war-date from Buford. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
