Description
Edmund Randolph Group Lot (3 ALS and 2 Signatures) This lot features five items that have been signed or written by Edmund Randolph. Randolph was the first Attorney General of the United States. He also served as Aaron Burr's defense counsel during his treason trial in 1807. This lot contains letters regarding Masonic matters, included in the lot are three autograph letters signed by Randolph, one of which reads in part, "Sir, I believe, you are a mason; and therefore inclose (sic), what has been sent me, that there may be no miscarriage. Indeed I do not known who the grand secretary is, so that I must beg the favor of you to deliver the letter to the proper person-"The three letters measure 7.5" x 9", 5.3" x 8", and 5.3" x 8". The signatures appear on pieces of paper which measure, 4.3" x 1.5", and 7.5" x 3.6". Four documents are in very good condition, with slight signs of aging. The two letters and two signatures show the normal darkening and erosion that occurs with iron-gall ink. The paper is still sturdy and the writing is dark and crisp. The letter which contains the Masonic content is in good condition; the paper has begun separating from the lining it was dried on and staining has begun to set in, making the writing very light and hard to read. The signature, however, is still quite visible and clear. An interesting lot from one of the country's early statesmen. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
