Description
Exceptional Clarion Pinback, 30mm diameter. A true gem with vibrant colors and excellent surfaces. As good as they come! This Clarion or Herald pin is regarded by many as the quintessential suffrage button or badge. Currently it is used as the symbol of the Woman Suffrage Chapter of the APIC. It was issued by the Women's Political Union, an organization founded in 1910 by Harriot Stanton Blatch, daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Blatch had lived in England for 20 years, and while her departure in 1902 predated the formation of Emmeline Pankhurst's Women's Social and Political Union in 1903, she was heavily influenced by the English organization. This pin borrows both the W.S.P.U.'s official colors of purple, green, and white and the herald design itself. The six stars on the Herald's flag denote that this pin was made in 1911 or 1912 after California had been added to the suffrage column. Five other sizes and variants of this pin are known to exist.Auction Info
