Description

Louisville, Kentucky Signed Full Stock Percussion Rifle, Circa 1840. A true "Kentucky" rifle. Full octagon approximately .30 caliber rifled barrel, 7/8" across the flats. German silver blade front sight, v-notch rear sight. Signed on the barrel at the breech in block letters M. Dickson, another name that is nearly illegible but clearly begins with a G, and Louisville, Ky. It is very likely the barrel was shortened approximately 2" at the breech during the period of use as the result of being "burned out." Single screw back action lock marked G. Goulcher. The screw at the rear of the lock is an old replacement as is the hammer screw and the forward trigger guard screw. Lock and double set triggers function perfectly. The forward trigger exhibits scalloped decoration and bears the number 23. All metal with smooth gray patina, just some minor pitting in the breech area. All brass furniture with nice dark untouched patina. Full maple stock with artificial graining also with nice smooth dark untouched patina, just one small old repaired crack to the rear of the hammer, minor. The nose cap appears to be a period replacement and is open at the front, again indicative that the gun was shortened slightly during the period of use. The barrel is held to the stock with four wedges, only one of which remains. The breech plug tang, which extends 4¾" on to the wrist is broken with a 1¾" piece missing behind the breech. A nice southern made rifle, really far superior to the majority that were being produced during this period, just requiring some minor "tinkering."
