Description

Rare 1850-1865 Period 25 Star U.S. Flag with Detailed Analysis from Noted Flag Authority Fonda Thomsen. Very desirable size, 22¾" on the hoist and 27½" on the fly. Constructed of wool bunting with twenty-five white cotton five-pointed stars. The large center star is 2½", the smaller stars 1½". The points of the stars are randomly arranged which is typical of flags from the early to mid 19th century. The stars are appliqued to each side of the canton. There are three sets of cotton ties attached to the leading edge. The twenty-five stars suggest a period of construction between 1836 and 1837 when Arkansas obtained statehood, with the large star in the center being in honor of the new state. Ms. Thomsen's analysis, however, indicates the flag dates to the 1850-1865 period, as is evidenced by the use of double warped bunting and 3/2 cotton thread. Ms. Thomsen concludes "the flag was constructed by a skilled person, experienced in the construction techniques required for manufacturing serviceable flags. The construction is substantial and intended for prolonged use but is not a military issue", based primarily on the weight of the hoist. Ms. Thomsen believes the flag saw moderate use and was "hoisted and flown for an extended period of time". The flag is in very good sound condition with some small areas of loss that appear to be primarily the result of use. The red fabric is a bit faded, the white oxidized to light tan, the cotton stars off white. The blue canton retains strong color. A rare flag doubtless associated with the state of Arkansas and likely seeing use into the early stages of the Civil War.
