Description
Huge Camp/ Bowie Knife by T. Wilson, Sheffield, along with Other Items that were the Property of William B. Sayers C.S.A. We believe the knife to be slightly post war, thus including it in this venue. The knife is 17½" overall, with an 11½" clipped point, slightly curved blade that is 1¾" wide just above the ricasso. The back edge of the blade exhibits decorative cutouts/ serrations, deeply cut 2½" clipped point with false edge. Marked horizontally on the reverse of the blade "T. Wilson/ Sycamore St./ Sheffield England" with "Hand Forged" marked vertically. Blade smooth and gray with some touches of luster. No nicks, rust or pitting, very impressive. Plaque stag grips affixed with brass pins. Heavy two piece bird head pommel with iron pins/ rivets. Hilt perfect.Accompanying the knife is: a pair of Civil War style, japanned, brass binoculars, marked Day & Night on the barrels, and Graummunt Marine Paris on the eyepieces; a three draw brass telescope, 13" when opened, eye piece cracked; a .36 caliber iron bullet mould marked CS on the sprue cutter (and actually appears to be authentic); and a scarce zinc pistol flask depicting a cherub and a stag. All of these items show heavy wear/ use, but intact and sound. The set is also accompanied by a six page ink script letter on stationary of the "Mountain Remnant Brigade, Texas U. C. V., dated Jan. 17, 1898, and addressed to "Maj. Gen. William B. Sayers" (the rank he held as commander of the Texas U. C. V.) Great letter detailing the formation of the Mountain Remnant Brigade, including war time references. Sayers served in the 8th Texas Cavalry and as a Confederate General and Staff officer, through the entire war including Shiloh, Chickamauga, Kennesaw, and Atlanta and his original newspaper obituary is also included with the group. A great knife with the added interest of ID to a gallant Confederate officer.
