Description

Lead Plaquette with Relief of Venus
Europe (Germany?)
16th century.
3-5/8"H.
Oval lead plaquette with a relief of the Toilet of Venus. The goddess is being tended by handmaidens adjusting her hair and holding up a cloak. Cupid holds a mirror behind Venus whose face is reflected in it. Her fleshy neck and bosom are exposed and her hair flows behind, partially covering her servants. The hairstyle and features of the women indicate the 16th century as a possible date, and it may have been produced in Germany. The letters AN and AB are arranged in a monogram similar to that of Albrecht Durer's, but the artist has not been individualized.
