Description

Exceptional Condition Virginia Militia Officer's Bell Crown Shako, Circa 1830. 8¾" from the front of the squared off visor to the front edge of the crown. Woven gold bullion suspensory cord with tassels, attached to hooks at each side. Scaled brass chinstrap with leather liner and small brass closure buckle. Circular eagle in oak leaf and acorn wreath brass side buttons. Eagle front plate of exceptional quality, 5" from wing tip to wing tip. Multi layered 1 5/8" leather cockade with one piece Virginia (VA 2) state seal button. Absolutely indigenous to the shako. 7" yellow wool pom pom with horn shaft for attachment to a leather loop inside the helmet. The shako exhibits a noteworthy rear extension with 1 1/8" wide separately affixed leather band around the base with embossed decoration in a diamond pattern. Thick leather visor with embossed decoration, painted green on the underside. Retains the original 2¼" soft leather sweatband with draw string. Really superb condition. The leather finish with some very light crazing and just a few minor cracks but absolutely no flaking and very sound. Completely untouched. A really choice specimen of this iconic piece of American military headgear, as worn from 1821 through the Mexican War.
