Description
War of 1812/ Napoleonic Era: Very Fine Gilt Brass English Officer's Saber. 28½" curved blade with wide shallow fuller, decorated with deeply engraved and gilded floral motifs with crown over intertwined script GR flanking III on the obverse. Similar designs with the British Royal Coat of Arms with mottoes on the reverse. The back of the blade is marked "F. F. Runkel in Solingen", obviously the blade maker. Blade fine, generally bright and clean, retaining traces of the gilt with just some minor scattered staining. Reverse P guard brass hilt with bird head pommel and backstrap. Guard with a single outward branch and disc quillon. Hilt excellent retaining 50% of the original gilt. One piece ivory grip with a few small chips at the top, and a small chip near the base at the backstrap, else excellent. The variegated color is the result of a few small areas having been covered/ protected, easily cleaned. Leather scabbard about perfect. The scalloped edge brass mounts retain 20% of the original gilt with no dents. The reverse of the top mount is script engraved in a 1 3/8" circle, "Mallet/ late Knubley/ No. 7/ Charing Crofs/ London". Knubley ceased operations in 1794, dating this sword circa 1800.
