Description

[Sheet Music]. [Thomas] Rice. The Original Jim Crow. New York: E. Riley, [n.d., Circa 1832]. The Character Jim Crow was created in 1830 by white minstrel performer Thomas Rice, purportedly based on a person he had observed in real life. The character and the term "Jim Crow" subsequently became synonymous with the stereotype of the "lazy and foolish Negro" and was later used to describe the culture of segregation enacted after Reconstruction.
