Description

[Edward Tracy Turnerelli.] Two Nights in a Haunted House in Russia. London and Leamington: Lionel Booth and H. Whippell, respectively, 1873. Second edition. Octavo. 185 x 125 mm. xxxiv, 150, [2, review], [1, edition notice], [1, blank] pages. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the Benedictines de M. de Angelis, Princethorpe, in gratitude for their care of his daughter. Publisher's purple cloth stamped in black and gold, lettered in gilt on spine, and stamped in blind on the lower board, with dark gray endpapers. Moderate wear to extremities, corners bumped, some scuffing to boards, spine sunned, head and tail pushed, faint scattered staining. Text block edges stained red, front hinge cracked, rear starting, inscribed by the author on the front free endleaf verso, followed by a tipped-in leaf with two epistolary reviews, title with clear purple stamp of the Benedictine Monastery, pencil notation to top of same, authorial inscription to prefac (page xxxiii), light staining to rear endleaves. Very good.

The second edition of Turnerelli's Russian ghost story, the first printed for private circulation only, and the second for sale solely to benefit charities, as here, written in commemoration of the marriage of the Grand Duchess Marie and the Duke of Edinburgh. From the Gary Munson Collection
