Inscribed by Caldecott to Teddy and Dorothy Butler, "Teddy & Dorothy Butler / from / Andrew Caldecott / Christmas 1948," to front free endleaf recto. Octavo. 190 x 130 mm. 222 pages [pages 1-2 are blank]. Bound in the original two-tone blue cloth boards, upper board and spine stamped in black. Corners bumped and rubbed, moderate wear to extremities, some scuffing, scattered staining to lower board and spine, head and tail pushed, some fraying at joints. Text block edges toned and foxed, top edge dusted, endpapers lightly foxed, intermittent foxing to margins, bookseller notation to front free endleaf recto. Dust jacket unclipped, priced "8s. 6d. net" to inner front flap, foxed and soiled, chipping with some losses along edges, tape repairs along top edge and folds on verso, spine taken from another copy and completely restored.

Caldecott's second and last collection of ghost stories, many after M.R. James, and several of which are based on his personal experiences as a civil servant in Southeast Asia.
