Description
[Civil War]. Patrick R. Cleburne Letter of Recommendation Signed ("P. R. Cleburne Maj Genl") Shortly Before the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Three pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7.25", "Head Quarters, Cleburne's Division Missionary Ridge" [Tennessee]; November 8, 1863. Letter addressed to Lieutenant Colonel David Urquhart, assistant adjutant general to Braxton Bragg, concerning a commission for a young soldier on his staff. Docketed. It reads, in part:"A week or two since I forwarded to you... an application for a commission for Mr. Byrne. I am very desirous to see the application successful. This young gentleman is eminently deserving. He left England to volunteer his services in our cause. He has been on my staff. I have found him a brave and gallant officer... and devoted to our cause. I am the more anxious he should be appointed because he has sacrificed the opportunity of being commissioned in the British serve. He passed the examination required to intitle him to be placed on the list of possible appointees before he left England, which he did upon a limited leave of absence. His leave has now expired and as he understands, he has forfeited his chance... in that service... I shall feel much gratified if by any use of it, you can advance the gentleman's interest..."
Patrick Ronayne Cleburne (1828-1864), a native of Ireland and a veteran of the British Army, immigrated to the United States sometime around 1849, where he practiced property law. Upon reaching the rank of major general in the Civil War, he became the highest-ranking Irish U.S. military officer. He planned the capture of the U.S. Arsenal in Little Rock, Arkansas, and participated in several significant battles during the Civil War, including Shiloh, Perryville, Richmond (Kentucky), and Chickamauga. In 1864, Cleburne proposed the emancipation of slaves in exchange for their enlistment in the Confederate Army, a move that earned him the scorn and derision of other Confederate officers and halted any further military advancement for Cleburne. He was killed during a charge at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. His autograph material is considered a scarcity. This particular example is accompanied by an engraved portrait of Cleburne in uniform by H. B. Hall's Sons.
Condition: Tape repair to split along bottom of integral fold. Soiling along right edges. That does not affect legibility. Mounting residue at upper margins of pages [1] and [4].
