Description
Four American and Scottish Revolutionary War-Era Newspapers. A series of beautiful and bright examples of Revolutionary War-era newspapers ripe with news on the war front, both in the colonies and overseas, including major cities like New York, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.1) The Pennsylvania Evening Post. Philadelphia; Tuesday, April 8, 1777. B. Towne. Vol. III [3], number 336. Six pages, 8" x 10". Paginated 191-194, 199-200 and printed in two columns. Page 199-200 include the Supplement to the Pennsylvania Evening Post. Number 337. One notable article reports on a recently passed act in Parliament authorizing "rebel" colonists to be transported to Britain and tried for treason. "Those who have stirrup, fomented or led the rebel armies, are to be brought over to England to be tied in the usual forms of high treason..."
2) The Edinburgh Evening Courant. Edinburgh; Saturday, July 12, 1777. R. Fleming. No volume or issue number. Four pages, 11" x 17.25". Unpaginated and printed in three columns.
3) The Glasgow Mercury. [Glasgow]; Thursday, October 22, 1778. Robert Chapman and Alexander Duncan. Number 42. Eight pages, 9" x 12". Paginated [331]-338 and printed in three columns. Includes extracts of letters sent by Generals Cornwallis and Clinton.
4) Ruddiman's Weekly Mercury. Edinburgh; Wednesday, November 7, 1781. Walter and Thomas Ruddiman. Number XLVI [46], volume VI [6]. Eight pages, 8.625" x 11". Paginated [361]-368 and printed in three columns. Features an article speculating on General Cornwallis's situation at Yorktown, as news of his surrender had yet to reach across the Atlantic. "The situation of Lord Cornwallis must be dangerous in the extreme... The next accounts that arrive from America will decide, in all probability, the fate of the war on that continent."
Condition: Light scattered soiling and foxing. Two with minor dampstaining in margins. Ruddiman with 1.5" x 1" area of paper loss to upper right corner of two pages that affects three lines of text. Edinburgh Evening reinforced along integral fold with archival tissue.
