Ashbel Smith. Reminiscences of the Texas Republic. Annual Address Delivered Before the Historical Society of Galveston, December 15, 1875. Galveston: Published by the Society, 1876.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. [iii-v] vi-xvi, [17]-82 pages. With the original tan printed front wrapper present (lower wrapper missing). Bound in modern half black morocco and black cloth. Housed in modern board slipcase.
The occasion of the text here was a speech Smith gave by invitation to the Galveston Historical Society in the fifth year of its existence. So important did the Society consider the material that it published it in this form, the first and only of its series. Sabin stated that there were only 100 copies published, and it has also been said that only forty were distributed. In 1963, Eberstadt stated that "A fraudulent edition has flooded the market for some years." Both Eberstadt and Jenkins state that page 81 of the reprint is unnumbered, but that is not the case.
Jenkins writes, "The text is personal but objective, a blended narrative of anecdote and analysis. Smith reviews the Texas border question, the various votes and movements for recognition and annexation in Texas and the United States, his activities in France and England, and the treaties which he negotiated. He carefully treats the slavery issue and corrects the 'grave' errors in the 'incomplete and otherwise not wholly reliable history of Texas by Yoakum.'"
Condition: Front wrapper with red ink check mark and soiled on verso. Verso of final leaf soiled.
