Description

G.N. Allen. Mexican Treacheries and Cruelties, Incidents and Sufferings in the Mexican War. Boston & New York, 1848.

RARE FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Two full-page and sixteen text woodcuts. Modern blue cloth, with original printed wrappers bound in.

Pingenot writes, "A jingoistic account of the experiences of a Massachusetts Volunteer, along with a summary of the various battles with Mexicans, anecdotal stories, and a detailed description of the funeral procession of Captain George Lincoln who was killed in the Battle of Buena Vista." Howes describes it as "Reasonably uncommon; utterly worthless."

This lurid, flagrantly racist pamphlet contains several engravings of scenes from the Texas theatres of the war, most notably the cover illustration (repeated in text) of the Great Western, whose given name was Sarah Bowman. She was a camp follower during the Mexican War who earned her living as a hotelkeeper and sometimes prostitute. Allen includes several flattering passages on her, providing a rare account of women's experiences during the Mexican War.

Condition: Some toning to text and stained throughout with some paper loss to the edges, occasionally affecting text.
