Printed in Report Of The Secretary of War, Communicating, In compliance with a resolution of the Senate, a map showing the operations of the army of the United States in Texas and the adjacent Mexican states on the Rio Grande; accompanied by astronomical observations, and descriptive and military memoirs of the country.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 144 pages. Eight lithographed plates and two lithographed maps. Modern half morocco and marbled boards.
The large folding map showing the route to Texas is one of the early large-scale maps of the Rio Grande Valley based on actual surveys. This important report is mostly comprised of various documents concerning the march of General Wool's command from San Antonio to Saltillo, where his troops participated in the Battle of Buena Vista. Although the documents are valuable records because of the scientific and military information they usually contain, they are also remarkable in many respects for the descriptions of Mexican life they sometimes humorously, sympathetically, and movingly convey. Although several of the reporters show sympathy for the populace, few say anything encouraging about the Mexican government itself. As Hughes remarks, "Nothing can be imagined, in a country pretending to be civilized, so inefficient, despotic, capricious, and oppressive as the government of the (so called) Mexican republic."
