Description
Charles Hooton. St. Louis' Isle, or Texiana; with Additional Observations Made in the United States and in Canada. London: Simmons and Ward, 1847.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. xiii [1] 204 pages. Six uncolored lithographed plates, including frontispiece portrait. Original embossed teal cloth, partially opened. Housed in a modern quarter Morocco clamshell case.
The lithographed views of Texas are perhaps the most valuable aspect of the book. The Texas plates are titled, "The 'Fever' Burial Ground," referencing the Galveston yellow fever epidemic of 1839, "General Hospital," located in Galveston and one of the earliest hospitals in Texas, "Galveston, from the Gulf Shore," "Scene on a Bayou," and "Settlers Houses on the Prairie." These plates are among the earliest views of the Houston-Gulf Coast area.
This work was published posthumously. During his nine months in Texas, Hooton contracted malaria and subsequently returned to England in poor health. The novelist began using morphine to self-treat his illness and died from an overdose on February 16, 1847.
Raines writes, "This dyspeptic Englishman is anti-American and anti-Republican throughout, and can see no good in Texas or her people. Yet the book is in place entertaining. The title is the French form of the old Spanish name for Galveston Island."
Condition: Rebacked with original gilt-lettered spine laid down, spine and board edges a bit toned, some minor pale stains on rear cover. Some text leaves lightly evenly toned and the rear endpaper has been torn out and repaired, short marginal tear on ad leaf at end.
